From 1845, 36,412 Girmitiya labourers rebuilt the sugar industry after emancipation.

Jamaica imported 36,412 Indian indentured labourers between 1845 and 1913 to sustain its sugar industry after emancipation. Though smaller in scale than other Caribbean colonies, the Indo-Jamaican community preserved distinct cultural traditions.
