Between 1879 and 1916, 60,965 Indians were brought to Fiji under the indenture system. They called themselves 'Girmitiyas'. Today, Indo-Fijians form a vital part of the nation's cultural and economic fabric.

Leonidas arrived at Levuka, the first organised indentured voyage to the Pacific.

1913

Totaram Sanadhya exposed indenture abuses, inspiring Gandhi's activism.

1916

Indenture abolished. A total of 60,965 Girmitiyas reached Fiji.

Today

Australia's National Library has digitised over 60,500 immigration passes.
